Default [BETA] build.prop Editor - Rooted Spica Only

.....To start off with I'll put the obvious:

WARNING: THIS TOOL MODIFIES CRITICAL SYSTEM FILES. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE SHOULD THE WORST HAPPEN.

That said, you SHOULD be fine.

What is it? What does it do?

"build.prop modifier" is what it says on the tin. A free application for rooted Spicas that allows you to easily backup, modify and restore your build.prop. It is currently in BETA- I need testers!

    Currently it allows:

Backup of build.prop to SD card.
Restore of build.prop from SD card.
LCD Density changing. (120,130,140,160,180 and 200).
Changing of Device name from GT-I5700 to GT-I5800 or DROIDX (more to come, I'll probably give you a Custom option.)
Enabling and Disabling use of phone when there is no SIM inserted.
Change the Android version number (This allows me to run my games compiled for 2.2 on Android 2.1 with FE.)
Why? Well, changing the device name [edit] FINGERPRINT...[/edit] changes what you see in the market, the DroidX option SHOULD open up the market to most apps. Note that that doesn't magically make your phone compatible, it just means you can see more.

If you could give it a try, let me know if it works for you or not, and if you have anything you know of that you would like to be added, you can also mention it here.

    1) New release, a little clean up really. It's a mess anyway so it doesn't matter. http://www.damiensturdy.co.uk/bpm2.zip
    2) Source code!: http://www.damiensturdy.co.uk/BPM_Source.zip

    Screenie:

I'm happy to give the source code out, Though the codes probably the worst I've written in a long time. I'm not used to Java ;-)

WARNING: If you rush the application, it has been known to corrupt the build.prop file. Load the application, wait for it to get its permissions, then perform a backup, then make your choices. Be patient with it, because if you click things as fast as you can there have been problems saving files.

I will fix this as soon as I can get to a dev machine.

Remember, if you're patient, you'll be fine, and if it does corrupt, just restore your backup (you'll want to mount the SD card in recovery to do that.)

The bug isn't really what I wanted out of my first application, but it'll be fixed soon.

I'm using Alpha7 too. Any error messages?

You might need to allow unsigned apps to be installed- I have not set this one up yet.
[edit] I'm heading off for a few hours, will look at the problem when I get back.

OK, I updated the file. Installation troubles should be sorted!

    Current known issues:

Restoring the backup will not work. Backing up the file works, it'll story itself as backupbuild.prop on your SD card, but you'll need to restore it manually until the next release.

Setting the LCD density >160 causes the close and restart buttons to be hidden. Setting it above 180 hides half of the LCD buttons. Not a big deal, but take care as changing the settings on 180 or 200 means you'll have to manually restart. I need to learn more about layouts to fix it :-)

@terenceleechan - I'll try to get this sorted later today. It's a daft typo in the source. I'll add more tweaks over time, yep. I'll be releasing source too so people can add their own mods too.

If I have time I'll have a plugin architecture so you can add your own mods by text file :-)

@skad - It needs testing, but I was able to install ThinkFreeOffice, so I presume it has worked. Of course if more work needs to be done, I'll do it. :-) Playing with it last night I found the i5800 change enables you to register the office app, but the droidx mod does not appear to work- I might have missed a line from the DroidX mod

I'll have a look around the DroidX mod again before updating the application and make sure that everything that needs changing for the feature is being applied.
