Hi guys. As you all know (hopefully) I'm in love both with Android and with Spica. So it's not about pledging for anything, nor am I a Microsoft employee).
I just installed Windows 8 Developer Preview and I must admit it's... it's... AWESOME! Not sure it's the perfect product for desktop users at the moment, in matters of UI, but it's definitely usable. The home screen has a metro interface, but you can switch it easily to "desktop" mode.
What's totally annoying, is that the start button becomes something completely different, and it takes you to the Metro interface if you click it.
Now... what can I say? I'm completely surprised of how much I like it and I would definitely love to see it running on my tablet (which would be more like a compact PC - yeap, that's how they call them, PCs, but they look totally like tablets). And to be sincere? As I grew up with Windows and it's the OS which I use the most (besides Android, which I started using only one year and a half ago), and I am counting mostly on Windows applications, thinking that I could have a tablet/hybrid running Windows 8 makes me giggle. Being able to run any *.exe and having a seamless integration with the PC, sounds just marvelous. And yes, sadly if it were for me to choose between having a tablet with Honeycomb or one running Windows 8, I would totally go for Windows 8. It seems just amazing to me. Again, I don't want to discredit Android in anyway, as it's the one I love the most, but in matters of utility... Anyway, they're two totally different things!
Anyway! Besides what I specified earlier, what I noticed is that the Metro apps, after you switch to desktop mode and you go to Task Manager, become "suspended", which looks totally like Android! It's a total ripoff! Also, when looking at task manager, I noticed that the CPU is running at different speeds, depending on what I'm doing (can't remember Windows doing this on its own without the ASUS utility). These two things mean longer battery life and lower power consumption I suppose (for laptops, tablets, portable PCs).
Had no problem with drivers, nor with apps, except for EasyBCD (yeah, this is my 5th OS at the moment, and I really need that, but I'll find a workaround with good ol' Ubuntu).
If anyone else gives it a try, leave your comments/opinions here, as I'm really curious of your side of the story.
Again, try not to throw stones at me, please. I love Android and this post wasn't about Android vs. Windows.
P.S.: By using a hibernation file / state (I suppose), on my Intel Core 2 Quad 2.3 processor with 2GB of RAM, it loads (from complete shutdown, counting after the POST message) in 6 FREAKIN SECONDS!!! Also, shutdown takes about 3-4 seconds, which is SIMPLY AMAZING!
