The admin at samsung-firmwares have made a post about this subject.

As they seem to have the ear of Samsung dev people, if you have comments, it's probably worth not only signing the petition (which won't make anything happen directly, but will show support for this among what is a fairly small community!) but posting in your comments there.
It's been noted that the Samsung devs do keep tabs on places like Samsung-firmwares and here, but that blog post is likely to get noticed more than a thread, in a forum, in a subforum, etc.
As I have noted there (and in their forum) a couple of hours a week input from Samsung themselves to a community 2.2 Spica project would do no harm at all, even if it's just "here's some libs we've hacked together, they go in this location, and here's some starting points for fine tuning" sort of input - I'm sure there are users in our community who would find that invaluable.
Bear in mind however that their first priority will be getting the new phones on the street, so don't expect miracles...

yes the guys from xda are working to make a froyo rom for g1...
I think porting 2.2 to Spica is same as G1, due to hardware limitation. No enough memory to store the OS.
Seems unlikely Froyo wouldn't fit.ROM size refers to the amount of internal storage, not the OS's size on the internal storage. As far as I know, cupcake is only about 30-40mb of the available 180, and eclair is slightly bigger than that, perhaps a 50mb of the available 180.
I seriously doubt the next android release would suddenly double to over 100mb.
Does anyone know the internal storage for the G1? I always thought it was the same as the internal storage as the Galaxy Spica, but I could be very wrong.
