Default Causes of slowness/lag in Spica

One problem that I have always had with Spica is that it becomes unbearably slow and starts hanging with use of one or other application requiring me to pull the battery and re-flash it all over again. Now, this is quite painful to do all the setting over and over again.

It is a know fact that some apps cause this problem. I'm trying to create a list of apps or other things that cause this slowness on Spica.

    1. Pansi messaging app - This seemed to be the root of my problems. I removed it and things seem okay for the last few days.

Anything that you guys have encountered?

yes. spica has only one CPU core and very little RAM. These two factors combined with buggy apps lead to the situation you describe. Also bugs in ROM don't help either.
stock + z4root = fast and stable rooted ROM

    1. Pansi messaging app
Actually, I replaced GO SMS with Pansi as it seems to be lighter on resources than GO.

I *strongly* recommend the autostarts app - especially if you're still on Eclair such as myself. You wouldn't believe how many unnecesary event hooks there are by default. One of the things that irritated me the most was Maps. It spawned at pretty much everything you did. You sneezed and there it was the dialog that Maps was not responding, even if you hadn't called it in months. With the autostarts I discovered Maps was linked to an awful lot of events it had nothing to do with - installing an app for example, so everytime you installed or updated something from the Market, Maps would be launched.

Its cousin, Layar, was also tied to a lot of completely unrelated events. And if you are really audacious, you can start mowing on AN AWFUL LOT of widget entries for those apps that will place a widget option for every possible size from 1x1 to 4x4 when you're really only interested in one size, one widget, for ever - this will dramatically improve the response time when you long-press the desktop to add another widget or shortcut.

It's still no SGS of course, but it's working much better after this. Even battery life improved marginally as you're saving power on those unnecesary CPU cycles and scaling up.

The following apps have caused lags:
    -maps
    -dolphin mini
    -boat browser mini
    -genie widget
-some keyboards: I have no problem with gb keyboard, skype and go keyboard, bot most of the others consume too much of ram

this is my list... for now

i've had the same problem for as long as i've been using custom ROMs on spica... after a month, it gets SLOW, and boot up time is SLOW, and it always has application System not responding once booted up...

i used to just factory reset, which seemed to fix the problem... but recently, i found that the problem seems to be with the file system.. instead of wiping all data, just TAR backup your data, and then format /data, and then restore... for some reason, formatting data partition seems to fix the problem for me...
