How do I install this on Spica?
[newbie note] am from G1 world. Is it the same way of keeping an update.zip on the sd card and boot?
    Please advise. Thanks.

You need to flash the firmware with Odin, see FAQ topic [i5700] How to flash your phone with Odin.

Several sites report that there is an official update but there are no means to update because KIES and PC studio doesn't recognize the I5700.

so I take this is the official 2.1 release for Spica. Now is there a way to flash this firmware on to Spica using the PC Studio or KIES instead of using Odin?
    Please advise.

I've tried a lot with KIES today, but it only recognizes my Spica when I start the program as administrator on Windows XP Professional 32-bit. It says it can synchronise calendar, contacts and tasks from outlook, but I haven't tried that.
It won't update firmware because it says I don't have an internet connection.

For now I think the easiest way is to use Odin in stead of installing a not-working 143mb program (over 250 mb installed)
