Default [NEED HELP] Phone NOT usable + flash via Odin with NO RESPONSE

    Please help!!
    1. My spica is not usable
It happened a week ago, my phone was on HP Kernel(2.6.32.9). The problem is that my phone keeps shutting down without warning after using for a while, it happens every time no matter how much battery left. After it shut down, it can hardly or never reboot again unless I connect it with the charger.
Then I noticed two things, one is my phone works perfectly with charger plugged in, and the other is the phone would not shut in standby mode(or I am not using it).
I suspect it maybe caused by the battery or the battery driver as the latest hp kernels have serious battery issue.(I have tried changing kernels and wiping battery stat, it doesn't work.) So I tried flashing back 2.1 via Odin and another problem came.

    2. No response, stuck in download mode
I don't know what went wrong, my phone just won't start downloading after I press 'start' in Odin. I read some posts to remind me how to flash and my steps are choosing the ops and 4 tar files(phone, pda, csc, boot) and uncheck the "reset time" box, then click 'start'.
    Odin says:
    <0> Create File...
    <1> StartThread Detected : 1
    <2> StartThread Detected : 0
    <3> StartThread Detected : 0
    <4> StartThread Detected : 0
    <5> StartThread Detected : 0
    <6> StartThread Detected : 0
    <7> StartThread Detected : 0
    <8> StartThread Detected : 0
    <1> setup connection...
then it doesn't load and my phone has no reponse(the bar is supposed to load to full, but it just won't.)

My English is not good, hope you guys can understand what I mean and give some help please. Now I can only use my phone with charger which means I can't take it out

Try disabling antivirus. The first time I was flashing via odin I had the same problem, disabled antivirus and it worked.

This has nothing to do with antivirus and the problem is 99% in the battery.

First problem is obvious as you said that it is working fine with the charger.
The reason for second problem is most probably that during upgrade the battery is not charging.
I had similar problem on iPod and also on my Spica where I had the same symptoms when the battery was low.

Battery is composed of several cells and most probably one of the cells is not working correctly.
This means that the voltage will be high so that the battery status will be shown as full. But when you
use actual load (current) the voltage drops quickly.
Usually this can be sometimes solved by connecting it to a higher voltage for a short time, but you need to know what you are doing.

I would suggest that you first try to borrow a new battery to see if it works and after that buy a new one.

yeah, point 1 happened to me as well, exactly the way you described it, and I resorted to point 2 which bricked my Spica and Samsung Jtagged back..the Official Samsung firmware Jtagged to me didn't solve the battery issue..It all started after the HP v13 flash that gave me bad battery life which I then decided to roll back which bricked it..

now, I have been using 2.1 Lk2.08 .1 for the last two days (and amazed with the stability and multitasking - but that's another story) and tried desperately to calibrate my battery, but still issues persist..I have tried charging the battery for 8 hours straight, thrice, with one powered on, and powered off, and with a standalone charger..now, I'm thinking of replacing the battery, but I'm holding off on the idea hoping someone could solve this..I flashed back to stock via Odin, tried every possible combination of Debug, Debug + Parameter Clear, Debug + Parameter Clear + PDA Format, Debug + PDA Format, cleaned and formatted my SD, still nothing..

@boofman, do you mean you need to plug in the charger to keep your spica alive, even after the brick? My case is I almost cannot use my phone at all without the charger. And I am afraid of bricking mine too

And yes, I think it's probably cauaed by damaged battery but unfortunately, I don't have a friend having a spica or the same battery. Anyway, I would give it a shot turning off antivirus tmr to see how it'd go.
Thanks guys, I really wish my spica could have a taste of tom's kernel.

Right, it has nothing to do with anti-virus. Closing the samsung studio works! My phone could flash with Odin. Thanks bra7a!
Sadly, it doesn't help with the shutdown issue and it should be the battery problem as suspected.
BTW, Samsung's batteries suck, they don't deteriorate in the normal way(like simply the usage hours drop or can't be charged to full) but they just die when they get aging. I guess I will buy a new battery later and it's so sad that I need to stick to my old phone from now on

I've had the same problem with Odin. It seems the serial connection doesn't work.
One day , i plugged my spica with my turned off notebook. When i tried later it worked fine. ~~ strange.
